Andreya Triana

Andreya Triana is a self taught singer hailing from South East London. In 2006, Triana participated in the Red Bull Academy Australia where she further developed her style and unique voice. Today, she’s been apart of many collaborations such as Flying Lotus “Tea Leaf Dancers” and geez, most of Bonobo’s Black Sands album. Can’t get enough? She’s coming out with a debut solo album this August. Her current single is “Lost Where I Belong” – samples of her hypnotic, soothing voice after the jump. Don’t sleep on this girl.

She Was Fly

All the way from Amsterdam comes the producer and vocalist duo known as Full Crate & Mar. The video above comes from their debut EP, “Conversations With Her”. I really like how this track came out, super chill, super smooth, and the video is pretty easy on the eyes. The EP is out now in digital format from iTunes and Amazon, and it is also available in vinyl as well, but I haven’t been able to find a source that has them in stock. If anyone finds one for retail, please let me know. Definitely a group to look out for. You can find more information about the group here.

Bonobo – Black Sands

Words cannot express how excited I am for this release. I’ve already got a pre-order with “Kiara” blue vinyl on the way. For those who aren’t familiar, Bonobo aka Simon Green, is a British musician/producer extraordinaire. It’s been four long years since his last release Days to Come but Bonobo is back, and with magic. (Not Animal Magic, but a different kind of magic.) Black Sands, will be his fourth album off Ninja Tune. He’s been teasing us with singles “The Keeper” and “Eyesdown” featuring Andreya Triana. He even went so far as to do a mini-mix of his entire album. We get it Bonobo. We get it. You’ve got our attention. Now we wait for Black Sands. (March 23, 2010.) Mini-mix and singles after the jump.

Daedelus + Nosaj Thing (KEXP)

I don’t know why any of us haven’t posted these two glorious videos up. All three of us were linked by several of our friends to these lovely sets by our favorite LA producers, Daedelus and Nosaj Thing. (Thanks Trav15 & Mike Lau for bringing this to our attention.) The two have just finished, along with Jogger, The Magical Properties tour. If you’re a fan, you’re in for a treat. Videos after the jump.

Ethiopiques

It was a warm Sunday afternoon when Andy and I stumbled into Poo Bah Records in Pasadena. I have to admit, I was overwhelmed by the plethora of good music just waiting to be sorted through. We skimmed the new music section before we heard softly, over the store speakers, these enticing melodies. Excited, we asked KUTMAH what it was to which he replied “Ethiopiques, No. 4, the blue one.” The rest is history. Ethiopiques has been on loop for the past few days. Ethiopiques is a series of compilations featuring Ethiopian and Eritrean singers and musicians. These recordings were done between the 60s-70s and are pretty rare finds. If you’re into jazz, I highly recommend a listen. Your ears deserve this treat. Two sample songs after the jump.

The XX: Sculpture of the Album

I’ve been hot on the trails of UK band The XX since the summer. Melancholy and eerily haunting vocals and melodies are what fill my mind whenever I listen. Already so highly visually, you can only imagine how excited I was to find out that they hired Saam Farahmand to develop a 3D physical interpretation of their album. I’ve been very keen on artists who mix both visual and audio together and really try and make their performances and experience as well as a show. I’m eager to see what this will look like. If you haven’t heard The XX, please do check out their debut self-titled album and if you want to treat yourself, pick up the limited 500 box set vinyl. (I have my eye out for the vinyl.) “Islands” and “Crystalized” posted after the jump.

The Mixtape Club

Gary and I have been stalking this website for a while now. I love the concept behind The Mixtape Club. It’s a great way to find new music and see what other creatives are listening to. Currently, Mixtape Club offers some slamming mixes from the likes of Siik and The Strange Attractor. Go on, give yourself some aural pleasure. You deserve it.

Enjin Beatbox

“Enjin” meaning APE-MAN in Japanese, is an excellent viral ad for Castrol Motor Oil. Watch the enjin beatbox like crazy. Tutorial videos also available for those aspiring beat machines.

FlyLo Born Day Jam

Impromptu Jam Sesh
In honor of Flying Lotus’ birthday, Artdontsleep organized an impromptu jam session at Echo Park. Judging by the photos, it looked like an epic session. The line up included Flying Lotus himself, Exile, Shafiq Husayn (SA-RA), Stephen ‘Thundercat’ Bruner (Erykah Badu, SA-RA), Miguel Atwood-Ferguson (Suite for Ma Dukes), Computer Jay (Master Blazter) and many others. Beautiful, soothing instrumentals. Download a snippet of the jam here. Way to go out with a bang, eh? More info on the line up after the jump.

Siik

siik

Just heard about Siik from the guys at in4mation. Siik is a freelance motion graphics designer/animator from LA, but he is mostly known for his remixes of various R&B and Hip-Hop tracks. Siik blew up after he released his remix to Amerie’s “One Thing“. Other than remixes, Siik also puts together some pretty dope mixtapes. Siik’s remixes and mixtapes are available to download from his website: siik.org. You can also find him on Facebook, where he posts updates and some classic tracks. If you’re lucky enough to be in Hawaii, you can purchase the only two of his mixtapes to make it to disc at the in4mation Ward shop. The “One Thing Siik Remix” as well as some of his other remixes are available for listening after the jump. (more…)

Since I Left You

The Avalanches are an electronic group out of Melbourne, Australia, and as far as I know they are pretty much unknowns in the US. Their breakout album “Since I left You” came out in 2000 and has so far been the only full album they have released. The stand out tracks for me were, “Since I Left You” and “Frontier Psychiatrist”, but what first brought me to listening to the Avalanches were the music videos. The video that drew me in was the video for “Frontier Psychiatrist”, but after recently re-discovering the “Since I Left You” album, I am liking the video for “Since I Left You” a lot right now. Both of these videos are awesome and I suggest that that you watch both of them. Above is the video for “Since I Left You” and you can find the video for “Frontier Psychiatrist” after the jump. Enjoy! (more…)

Joe Gosalvez aka Vezzen

I met Joe Gosalvez aka Vezzen through doing the Nosaj Thing @ SoHo event with Peanut Butter & Ghosts + ET/AL. Today he brought to my attention that his song was released on Leaders: Introduction to Crev-wave via his label, Briefcase Rockers. Peep it.

Among the producers in Hawaii, Joe’s sound definitely stands out. He collects various vocal samples and mixes in with spacey, hypnotic beats. Joe’s style is best described as “abstract and organic” and a trademark of his is the eerie, haunting bassline present in most his songs. He claims each one of his songs are vignettes of the culture and experiences he carries with him. Heavy stuff. A few sample tracks and a video courtesy of Trav15 after the jump.

Nosaj Thing in Hawaii

Here is a small clip for those of you who missed the Nosaj Thing performance in Hawaii this past summer. The show was put together by Peanut Butter & Ghosts with support from us, ET/AL. There is more to come from this collaboration, hopefully in the near future. So stay tuned.

Visual Show

Nosaj Thing
While this has been in the works and around, I had to post about it again because he is about to debut it at Red Bull MegaHurtz. “He” being LA Producer Nosaj Thing. Nosaj Thing, Julia Tsao, and Adam Guzman has teamed up to bring you one of the most breath taking visual shows I’ve seen to date. Synced perfectly with his live set, Nosaj Thing’s visual show is guaranteed to engulf your aural and sight senses. While he was in Hawaii, I got a chance to chat with him about how he was going to produce it live. He explains that he wants the show to be a complete 360-degrees experience. That is, you’ll be completely surrounded by the visuals as he plays. He mentioned though, in order to do that, it’ll require at least five projectors. Can’t wait! Video after the jump. Edit 10/5: Excellent photos from the show by David Lang.

808 LOVE

test01
Just got back from the Blue Scholars appearance at Too Gruves Record Shop in Puck’s Alley. Including my friend and myself, there were about 10 people in total, so you could say that it was an intimate performance. If you don’t know who the Blue Scholars are you should definitely check them out. The group is based in Seattle, but they have strong ties to the islands. They just released their “Oof!” EP, which is dedicated to the people of Hawaii. You can purchase the EP at the concert, iTunes, or on thieir website. The Blue Scholars are also currently on a Hawaii tour, though they are set to perform in Honolulu this Friday at the Loft. If you missed the concert last Friday at the Loft you should definitely check it out. Tickets are now available at in4mation. More photos after the jump. (more…)
