LA Times Covers CES 2010

What?! 3-D television!! Slimmer display panels!! What?! the television I just bought four months ago is already obsolete!! If you’re a design geek like us here at ET/AL, more often than not, technology hits that same spot.

With more than four decades of success, the International CES reaches across global markets, connects the industry and enables CE innovations to grow and thrive.

The International CES is produced by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), the preeminent trade association promoting growth in the consumer technology industry. CEA represents more than 2,000 corporate members involved in the design, development, manufacturing, distribution and integration of consumer electronics products. All profits from CES are reinvested into industry services, including technical training and education, industry promotion, engineering standards development, market research and legislative advocacy. The Fun Theory

The video above was brought to you by thefuntheory.com.

“This site is dedicated to the thought that something as simple as fun is the easiest way to change people’s behaviour for the better. Be it for yourself, for the environment, or for something entirely different, the only thing that matters is that it’s change for the better.”

Definitely a cool idea, hopefully this catches on. More videos after the jump. (more…)

Designing Obama

Designing Obama
One of the things I felt made the Obama campaign special was not only did he use Gotham, the beautiful typeface by Hoefler & Frere-Jones, but he really paid attention to the design of his campaign. I definitely think his utilizing the internet and actually taking the time to design a website, commercials, and an actual identity system for his campaign appealed to and won over a lot of young voters. Not only that, but Obama inspired a lot of art and design outside of his campaign as well. Designing Obama is a project by Scott Thomas in which documents both the official design work by the Obama campaign as well as independent artists. Thomas has joined with KICKSTARTER to raise money to publish the book. He will print as many copies as people who pre-order. Buy the book here. Trailer for the book after the jump.

Are you a Typophile?

Screen shot 2009-10-09 at 8.18.15 PM
If there’s something I enjoy, it’s letter forms. I love looking at type, I love making outlines and then making my own letters, I love hand crafting type, etc. You can then imagine how excited I was when I saw this article on the Typophile Film Festival 5 Opening sequence! Handcrafted and stop animated by the BYU design students and faculty. This year’s theme was typography based on the five senses. Click the article to view all previous introductions. This year’s introduction after the jump. I think I fell in love when I saw the fried ampersand. Oh god.

Maxim Zhestkov

maxim
I first learned about Maxim Zhestkov a few months ago and since then have adored his work. He’s a 23-year old designer from Russia whom says he’s been into art since he was 6. Not only has he been self-teaching himself for years, but upon entering college, he’s studied architecture, graphic design, fine art, illustration and sculpture. The thing I enjoy most about Zhestkov’s work is that he creates new spaces where shapes grow and exist. His work, both in print and motion, is very intricate, filled with easter eggs, and compelling. Some examples of his work are after the jump. Be sure to check out his portfolio as well as his vimeo account.
