Andreya Triana is a self taught singer hailing from South East London. In 2006, Triana participated in the Red Bull Academy Australia where she further developed her style and unique voice. Today, she’s been apart of many collaborations such as Flying Lotus “Tea Leaf Dancers” and geez, most of Bonobo’s Black Sands album. Can’t get enough? She’s coming out with a debut solo album this August. Her current single is “Lost Where I Belong” – samples of her hypnotic, soothing voice after the jump. Don’t sleep on this girl.

She Was Fly

All the way from Amsterdam comes the producer and vocalist duo known as Full Crate & Mar. The video above comes from their debut EP, “Conversations With Her”. I really like how this track came out, super chill, super smooth, and the video is pretty easy on the eyes. The EP is out now in digital format from iTunes and Amazon, and it is also available in vinyl as well, but I haven’t been able to find a source that has them in stock. If anyone finds one for retail, please let me know. Definitely a group to look out for. You can find more information about the group here.

The Blow Up

The Deadbeats are performing tomorrow night at Nextdoor for The Blow Up. The Deadbeats are going to perform some of their new cover songs from 1990’s sitcoms, which includes “Full House”, “Step By Step”, and maybe “Family Matters”. I hope that this isn’t some April fool’s joke, but even if it is, you should still check out the event to watch The Deadbeats perform live.

The Invention of Dr. Nakamats

The Invention of Dr. Nakamats, is a documentary about the greatest living inventor, Dr. Yoshiro Nakamatsu. Dr. Nakamatsu holds the world record for having the most patents. His current record stands at 3,357 patents, in comparison Thomas Edison only had 1,093 patents. Some of his inventions include the floppy disk, CD, DVD, karaoke, and the “Love Jet”. Dr. Nakamatsu is a very eccentric man, but what genius isn’t? I especially like his method of picking out a good camera, maybe that’s something I should be doing. Then again maybe not…

Unfortunately this documentary is not screening at The Spring 2010 HIFF, but be on the look out for official screening release dates soon. Previews after the jump.

Bonobo – Black Sands

Words cannot express how excited I am for this release. I’ve already got a pre-order with “Kiara” blue vinyl on the way. For those who aren’t familiar, Bonobo aka Simon Green, is a British musician/producer extraordinaire. It’s been four long years since his last release Days to Come but Bonobo is back, and with magic. (Not Animal Magic, but a different kind of magic.) Black Sands, will be his fourth album off Ninja Tune. He’s been teasing us with singles “The Keeper” and “Eyesdown” featuring Andreya Triana. He even went so far as to do a mini-mix of his entire album. We get it Bonobo. We get it. You’ve got our attention. Now we wait for Black Sands. (March 23, 2010.) RIP Jun Seba aka NUJABES

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it was just announced that Japanese DJ/Producer, Jun Seba aka “NUJABES” has passed away.

Here is the official word from SHING02:

“Today, I have very somber news for the international hip hop community, especially fans of the independent hip hop scene, and those who have followed my career.

It has been announced that Jun Seba, aka Nujabes, Japanese hip hop producer extraordinaire, passed away late February. Official statement from the label (in Japanese) here: http://hydeout.net/hydeout/2010/03/_hydeoutproductions.html

We deeply regret the loss of a unique talent and a close friend. Through his soulful music, Nujabes has touched so many people around the world, even beyond his dreams. He was a mysterious character to most as he avoided the public limelight, rarely conducted interviews, so only a few got to know the man behind the signature production. Yet it continued to amaze me how young listeners of all backgrounds learned of his enigmatic name, and expressed support for his music.

As I write now from Japan, I had been leaving him messages the past couple of weeks, trying to get in the studio together, so the news could not have come any more unexpected. Even last week, I passed by his house and called him thinking he was still home.

I met Nujabes around 2000 and as an upcoming MC, I was fortunate to work on tracks such as Battlecry, F.I.L.O, Luv(sic) parts 1, 2 and 3. We had been working on the next trilogy of Luv(sic) over the past year (which we’re determined to see through). The last time we talked in January, Nujabes emailed me to wish Jeff Resurreccion, a 19-year old beatboxer who had just passed way from cancer, his heartfelt condolences.

While we continue to respect the privacy of his family, we will work to preserve his legacy, and pay tribute to the body of work, some unreleased, that he has left for us to enjoy. Jun Seba will be dearly missed by his family, friends, colleagues, and fans worldwide.

I have been a NUJABES fan for years, ever since I first heard his work on the Samurai Champloo soundtrack. His music helped me get through a lot during my years at UH (I am sure that I am not alone on this). Hip hop has lost another great one, he will be missed. May he rest in peace.
