The following are favorites from the ET/AL staff. No categories in particular, just items that stood out in 2009 for us. Picks after the jump.
Annie’s Picks

Film: Star Trek
What? You were expecting Twilight? I’m not going to lie, I’m not a big movie buff. Of all the films I’ve seen this year, the one outstanding film has to be Star Trek. There’s a little something for everyone in this. Action, romance, and a bit of cheese. Zachary Quinto was amazing as Spock and Chris Pine a convincing, jocky Kirk. I really enjoyed the fact that you didn’t have to be familiar with the Trek series and fluent in Klingon to get into the film as it was an introduction. Go watch it if you haven’t yet.

New Artist: Nosaj Thing
You saw this coming. It has been a tremendously eventful year for Nosaj Thing (Jason Chung). He’s released his debut album, Drift, and toured the world all in one swoop. Just when you think he’s taking a break, beautifully remixed tracks seep from his studio to bring your ears the greatest aural pleasure. Oh, and then you see him live and he effortlessly blows you away with his incredible energy and visual show. Nosaj Thing has been on my “Artists to Watch” since I heard the first thick drum thumps of “Coat of Arms.” Can’t wait to see what this beat maestro comes up with next. If you haven’t heard him yet, go cop his album.

Song: Bonobo – The Keeper
I would have wrote about his album too but it’s not out yet! Bonobo is a staple in my daily music consumption. His songs are calming, beautiful and evoke vivid imagery for me. He’s perfect really. My relationship with Bonobo’s music started when a friend suggested Days to Come. I can loop Bonobo forever and he’s my favorite to listen to while I work or unwind. That said, you can only imagine how excited I was when “The Keeper” was released. A simple, haunting melody with the catchiest chorus sung by Ninjatune label mate Andreya Triana make it a most perfect song. Like all of Bonobo’s other work, I can loop it for a while. His new album is slated for an early 2010 release. Can’t wait!
Matt’s Picks
(Note: This is off the top, 2009 was not a great year for music. 2008 offered a much
wider variety of well rounded albums.)

New Artist: Drake
For the the past few years the main-stream has rarely produced an artist worth talking about. The years have been plagued with one hit wonders, recycled garbage, and out the box trends. However, this artist popped off a wheel chair (literally) and took over 2009. His eclectic sound, which includes an ability to rhyme and sing has proven to be a successful combination for a great track. I know there are individuals who may think Drake is pop, but give an honest listen to tracks “The Calm” and “Fear” and you’ll get a glimpse of an artist, not a “rapper.”
The Best Albums of 2009: The Blueprint 3 – Jay-z / Man on the Moon – Kid Cudi / The Estatic – Mos Def
I was torn between three of these three albums. The Blueprint 3 being one of Jay-z’s greatest solo releases,
while Kid Cudi brought something fresh to 2009 and Mos Def offered one of his most personal projects. However, Jay-z is forty, so I have to give it to Jay. Not to mention the album cover is dope and he recorded a few tracks right here in Honolulu Avex Honolulu Studios

Tracks of 2009:
Again, 2009 was not a great year for music. Most of the tracks I wanted to post were produced in 2008.
“Wild International” – One Day as a Lion
(Yes this was 2008, but “One Day as Lion” was the return of Zack de la Roca)
“The Best I ever Had” – Drake
“Quiet Dog Bite Hard” – Mos Def
“Empire State of Mind” – Jay feat. Keys
( I’m not even from New York and I had my hands flying high when I heard this track )
Design 2009

When I walked into a Starbucks in downtown Honolulu I was immediatley struck by Starbuck’s instant coffee packing. The whole visual cohesiveness of their product, including window displays and signage, has put this product at the top of my list. Designed by Hornall Anderson.

Although I did not see this film, the poster definitely caught my eye. This poster was designed by a studio that has produced a wide range of movie posters. Design by Ignition Creative.
Film 2009

Inglorious Bastards – This film was well executed. A perfect cast mixed with suspenseful, yet comedic dialogue made this QT film another classic to add to your dvd library.
Current Event of 2009

2009 was the year of Obama. The media blitz surrounding Barack Obama was overwhelmingly obnoxious. Whether body surfing Sandy’s, playing ball, or eating f*%king shave ice, Obama was everywhere. He has inherited a failing economy, two wars, and a country filled with expectations no one individual can deliver. He has been called a socialist due to his health care reform and expansion of federal oversight among large U.S. corporations. Obama has strengthened diplomatic ties abroad and was able to alter our nation’s image in the middle east. Love him or hate him, he’s our current President. We can only hope he does his job well and leaves a positive mark in U.S. history.
Gary’s Picks
A little late, but it’s alright.
Album 2009

What can I say, it’s Jay Z. Arguably the hottest rapper alive today.
